چکیده
Abstract Background Railroad maintenance of way (MOW) workers are exposed to many workplace hazards, including diesel fuel and exhaust, ballast (silica) dust, asbestos, solvents, herbicides, welding fumes, heavy rolling equipment, vibration extreme weather. Aims Due the number excess deaths we found in a companion standardized mortality ratio (SMR) study for union members <65 years, hypothesized that these may have elevated risks among all ages chronic conditions. Methods Proportionate ratios (PMRs) were calculated 37 661 male MOW 20 older who Brotherhood Maintenance Way Employes Division (BMWED). A data set was submitted National Death Index (NDI) identify decedents determine cause death died between 1979 2014. The CDC WONDER database used expected US males. Results For certain diseases cancers SMR PMR findings parallel excesses. Examples include septicaemia anaemia; diabetes; obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); nephritis; transportation accidents. Among cancers, oesophageal, stomach, colorectal, lung, prostate, kidney situ cancers. Two not replicated assessment—Alzheimer’s Parkinson’s disease. Conclusions suggest some excesses from elevated, which adds support their being consistently raised BMWED members. shared causes studies should be focused on future prevention surveillance activities.

BACKGROUND The evidence regarding the association between lung cancer and occupational exposure to cement is controversial. This study investigated causes of deaths from cancer of respiratory tract among cement workers. METHODS The deaths of the Greek Cement Workers Compensation Scheme were analyzed covering the period 1969-1998. All respiratory, lung, laryngeal and urinary bladder cancer pro...

BACKGROUND To evaluate the utility of expanding the number and precision of injury categories used in previous occupational mortality studies, this study reanalyzed data from four previous studies of unionized construction workers (construction laborers, ironworkers, sheet metal workers, and operating engineers), by expanding the number of injury categories from 6 to 33. METHODS Proportionate...

Diesel exhaust is a mixture of combustion gases and ultrafine particles coated with organic compounds. There is concern whether exposure can result in or worsen obstructive airway diseases, but there is only limited information to assess this risk. U.S. railroad workers have been exposed to diesel exhaust since diesel locomotives were introduced after World War II, and by 1959, 95% of the locom...
